Saint Patrick's Day is upon us....and in many of our houses, the kids (and the adults, we aren't gonna lie to you), were anxiously awaiting to hear that McDonald's released their famous 'Shamrock Shakes.' That minty, frothy, real bad for you and full of nonsense calories is just SO DAMN GOOD that we find ourselves at that drive through line more than not 🤣.

A boozy Shamrock shake topped with whipped cream and served in a glass beer stein. Green feathers and candy coins surround the base of the drink as St Patrick's décor

We decided we could figure out how to make our own at home and of course we had to try to turn it into an adult beverage as well - making it that much better! We will include the kid friendly recipe in here too, because sometimes you just need a sweet tooth fix and not the added alcohol!

All the ingredients are easily located in your local supermarket, for both recipes, which is even better! For the adult version, you will need vanilla ice cream, liquid food coloring in green (gel would probably work too), milk (whatever your preference is), optional whipped topping, and vodka. We have seen recipes call for a splash of Peppermint Schnapps. We decided to change it up a little and leave it out seeing as we don't drink many minty drinks and as you all know we are all about being budget conscious! If you are a really big fan of minty drinks, go for it and add in some Peppermint Schnapps for that extra kick! If you do, we would recommend leaving out the mint extract! The peppermint schnapps will give it that "minty" flavor, but you can also use mint extract and keep the alcohol additives to strictly vodka - you can't really go wrong and will end up with the same outcome!

For the kids drink, you need all mentioned ingredients above - vanilla ice cream, milk, optional whipped toping, green food coloring and pure mint extract!

  • 2 cups Vanilla Ice Cream

  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

  • 1/3 cup Milk

  • Whipped topping - optional

  • 6 drops Green food coloring

  • 1/2 c Vodka NOTE *if using Schnapps, use 1/4c.*

  • 1/4 c Peppermint Schnapps OR 1/4 tsp. Mint Extract -NOT BOTH!

  • 2 cups Vanilla Ice Cream

  • 1.5 cups milk

  • 1/4 tsp. mint extract (more or less for minty flavor preference)

  • Whipped topping - optional

  • 6 drops Green Food Coloring

The directions for both the boozy and non-boozy beverages are the same, so we will only include one set of directions for both! As always, you can substitute and personalize as you find fitting!

  1. Add all ingredients into a blender

  2. Blend together until it has reached your desired consistency

  3. Divide equally between two cups

  4. Top with desired garnishments - whipped cream, sprinkles, cherries....etc.

  5. ENJOY!

We love when we find the recipes that work for the kids just as much as us adults! If we are being honest, you could really add vodka to JUST about every beverage recipe and wa-lah you have a cocktail 🤣. We have been known to get quite creative at times here on Jasmine with drink concoctions. The worst part about those nights are when you have literally zero idea how you even managed to make the cocktail and it ends up being delicious!

This isn't our only favorite Saint Patrick's Day drink, check out last year's favorite - The Mini Beer! A much different take on a holiday beverage than this one, but just as good! Definitely not one you can make for the kiddos, though!

These at home Shamrock Shakes were kid and adult tested (except for one husband who hates everything mint) and approved! We love that you can customize them to fit your own preference in how strong the mint flavor is! Don't love mint like one of the hubbies - that's okay too! Leave the mint extract out and you can have a 'pretend' boozy Shamrock Shake! You really can't mess this one up - which might be another reason we love it so much!

Does your household love the Shamrock Shake as much as all of ours? Happy tasting and don't forget to let us know if you tried them! Tag away on social or comment below!
